Gina Werfel

Clearing

Clearing in R. Burnett Miller Park, McKinley Village, in Sacramento CA consists of seven porcelain enamel panels which, like pieces of a puzzle, interlock to reproduce an abstract painting, entitled Thicket, which emerges as visitors interact with the installation. Ranging in height from eighteen inches to six feet, the panels integrate the artwork on their front sides with the living landscape behind to create composite abstractions; on the reverse, the panels occupy space as monolithic blocks of color.

Rug Project

In the spring of 2018, Mehraban Rugs approached Werfel about the possibility of rendering her painting Roma as a fine art rug. Seeking to close the gap between arts and crafts, Mehraban was attracted by Werfel’s color palette, lively lines and overall composition. This collaboration will allow collectors to experience Roma in a new, more tactile way. Originally established in Teheran in 1945, Mehraban has been a fixture in the La Cienega design scene in Los Angeles for over thirty-five years.

The rug is currently being woven from Werfel’s artwork in Mehraban’s workshop in Kathmandu, Nepal. It is a 150 knot Tibetan Carpet, the highest quality Tibetan knot rug; the content is 50% Tibetan handspun wool and 50% Chinese raw silk. It is being woven in a 9’x12’ size.
